Interview With Leo Welder, Founder Of FindAFax

1) Why did you start FindAFax?

I’ve been professionally testing and reviewing business products and services for nearly ten years, and online faxing has always been one of the most popular categories. Most websites typically present comparisons from a single perspective, which assumes that people want the most features for the best price. That presentation works for a lot of people, but some people have a high need for a very specific feature, therefore they really only want to compare services that offer that unique feature or features.

For example, doctors can only use online fax services that are HIPAA compliant, so it is a waste of time for them to even look at services that don’t offer this feature. I built FindAFax to make it easy for these people to filter the plans based on their needs, so they can view a well-curated comparison rather than a general one.

2) What are the challenges people face in finding the right online fax service?

The vast majority of online fax services offer free trials, so this encourages people to just pick a service without researching services and cancel later, if they are unsatisfied. The service providers have noticed this, so they have started to make the cancellation process more difficult. For example, many providers will require that you cancel via phone or chat rather than online or via email.

It takes much less time to use FindAFax to find the right service the first time rather than going through free trials from multiple companies to finally find the right one.

3) What advice would you give to an entrepreneur who is looking to start an information site like FindAFax?

Always put yourself in the consumer’s shoes. You need to imagine yourself actually needing the product or services that you are reviewing or testing and ask yourself, “What would I want to know?” Then build your content around answering those questions.

Also, never let a high payout affect your content. If you mislead people, you’ll lose credibility. Once you lose the trust of your readers, you probably can’t get it back.

4) What’s the most important lesson you have learned in running this website?

Pretty pictures make a site look nice, but people on an information site want information. You only have so much screen space to utilize, so don’t waste it on cute but large graphics.

5) What are the most important skills people should have in order to run a site like FindAFax?

In order to run an information site, you need to have integrity, a deep understanding of your customers and the willingness to ask challenging questions and present the answers honestly.
